ULYSSES Composers’ Journey to Catchpenny @ Gaudeamus Muziekweek

08/2019 Gaudeamus – NL

The ensemble Catchpenny is ensemble-in-residence at Gaudeamus Muziekweek
2019.

The ensemble consists of young musicians and composers, based in The Hague (NL). The combination of acoustic and electronic instruments, together with video art, cinema and audio-visual installations is Catchpenny Ensemble’s main characteristic. The repertoire of the Ensemble consists of new collaborative multimedia works by its composers Yael Levy, Sascha Thiele and Nikos Kokolakis, alongside works by composers such us Peter Ablinger, Thrainn Hjalmarsson, Missy Mazzoli and Molly Joyce.

Several of the composers who have been nominated for the Gaudeamus Award 2019 are writing new works for this ensemble; they are joined by the young Mexican composer Jacques Zafra, based in Germany, who is enabled to participate in this project in the framework of the ULYSSES Journeys for composers.

The new works are rehearsed with the ensemble in the week before the festival Gaudeamus Muziekweek starts, which is 29 August – 4 September 2019.

And during the festival, which takes place from 4 through 8 September, the ensemble performs the works in concert at concert hall TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht (NL) and repeat the concert later in The Hague.
